How to Reach Coorg from Bangalore

  • The most frequent connection is from Bangalore to the main town of Madikeri. Although you can get direct buses to smaller towns of Coorg as well like Virajpet, Gonikoppal, Polibetta, Somvarpet etc

    There are around 8 buses that ply from Bangalore to Coorg on  a daily basis including KSRTC buses that operate through the Airavata Volvo bus service. Besides KSRTC, there are other bus operators as well like Poornima Tours, Ashwini tours and travels, Many Tourist and Sea Bird Tourist.

    All these buses are available in different categories like  Volvo AC SemiSleeper/seater/ Sleeper, Volvo Non AC Sleeper/Semisleeper/Seater, Mercedes AC and Non AC Sleeper/Semisleeper/Seater.

Drive from Bangalore to Coorg

Since Coorg is only a 6 hour drive away from Bangalore many people opt to drive down to visit in and around Bangalore to  enjoy the place at their own leisure.There are many routes one can take to reach here, listed below are the two most popular routes taken, one via Mysore and the other via Mangalore.

Route 1

Depart from Bangalore via Bangalore-Mysore Road (NH4 8): Bangalore – Bidadi – Ramanagara – Channapatna – Hunsur – Periyapatna – Karadigodu

Distance- 250 kms.

Route 2

Depart from Bangalore to Coorg via Bangalore-Mysore Road and Mangalore- Bangalore Highway (SH 17 and SH 88): Bangalore – Yeshwanthpur – Nelamangala – Holenarasipura – Bylakuppe – Kushalnagar – Suntikoppa – Madikeri.

Distance- 273 kms.

Typically one can reach Coorg in 5- 6 hours time depending on the amount of traffic and speed along the journey.

Bangalore to Coorg by Train

Coorg does not have a railway station so most people travel either to Mysore or to Mangalore from Bangalore. The best option is Mysore since it is the closest railway station and there are over 20 buses plying on a daily basis to Madikeri and many other towns in Coorg like Virajpet, Somwarpet, Hassan etc.

Nearby Railway Station:

The two closest railway stations are Mysore Junction (117 Kms from Bangalore) and Mangalore Central Railway Station (131 Kms from Bangalore). There are many trains plying from Bangalore to Mysore like Mysore express, Chamundi Express, Kannur express, Malgudi Express, Kaveri Express, Hampi express etc. The journey takes approximately 3 – 4 hours.You could also choose to travel from Bangalore to Mangalore. It’s connectivity to Coorg isn’t as great as Mysore and there are 2 trains that ply daily, the Kannur express and Karwar express.

From nearby Railway station to bus stop/other mode of transport: 

There are 3 bus operators that ply daily from Mysore to Coorg. They are Ashwini Tours and Travels, Sea Bird Tourist and Many Tourist with boarding points not too far away from the railway station. There are also taxi services available from the Mysore station to your destination in Coorg, although that could be pricey.

Mysore being at a distance of 117 kms from Bangalore, Coorg is approximately 99 kms away from Mysore.

The journey by bus from Mysore to Coorg is relatively cheaper and costs between Rs.300 to Rs.888 for a gold class comfort ride.  However, if you intend to travel by taxi, a TATA Indigo AC car trip would cost you approx Rs.3000 which is subject to change depending on the car you choose and the number of people traveling. The train journey from Bangalore to Mangalore costs approx Rs.280 and from there you can either travel by bus to Coorg or hire a cab which would cost anything between Rs.2000 – 4000.

Coorg does not have its own airport, the nearest airports are in Mangalore, Mysore, Calicut and Bangalore. If you’re travelling from Bangalore, Mangalore airport is your best option since it has frequent direct connectivity from most of the major cities in India. The Mysore airport is your next choice, although there are only a limited number of flights operating to Mysore from Bangalore.
